His Excellency Tan Sri Musa Hassan
Inspector General of Police (IGP)

Stop the Use of ISA to (1) Suppress the Press; (2) Silence Pro-Democratic Politicians (3) Use Violence against Malaysia Rights Activists

We the Indonesian Front for Civil and Political Rights in Southeast Asia condemn and protest the Malaysian Government detention and arrest of the following journalistsand politician on the 1`2th of September 2008:

Raja Petra Kamaruddin, editor Portal Malaysia Today
Tan Hoon Cheng, journalist Sin Chew Jit Poh
Teresa Kok, Member of Parliament

The Malaysian Government is still using the repressive Internal Security Act (ISA) to silence the Press and to oppress pro-democracic politicians and social activists. This shows the Malaysian Government lack of respect for the freedom of the press and democracy itself.

We also protest the use of violence justified by the ISA towards activists who fights for migrant rights in Malaysia, as well as the rights of refugees such as the Rohingnya community (Muslim Burmese), Acehnese tsunami refugees and other migrant groups in Malaysia.

ISA is a law created by the former British colonial rulers to repress the independence movement against them. By using the draconian ISA, the Malaysian government shows that, despite of being the member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, they give no respect to human rights and in breach of its own pledge to the international community to promote and protect human rights.

We call on the Malaysian government as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, to respect civil and political rights of Malaysian citizen and immigrants.

We the Indonesia Front for Civil and Political Rights in Southeast Asia demand:

  • Stop using the Internal Security Act to suppress the press and political freedom;
  • Immediately free the journalists and politicians who are still being arrested;
  • Free pro-democracy activists, rights activists that are being held under the draconian ISA.

Jakarta 18 September 2008,
