The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) called for the release of all who were arrested and detained under the ISA. The prolonged
detention of them, including Raja Petra and opposition leader Teresa Kok would only worsen the
crisis of credibility of the Abdullah administration and paint a
scenario of complete reversal to what he promised at the start of his
governance in 2004.
While CIJ welcomes the release of journalist Tan Hoon Cheng on the
afternoon of September 13, we are still concerned that the holding of
the other two under unclear grounds signals the reluctance to reform.
Instead, laws are used against those who criticize the government. The
urgency to reform and to stop relying on authoritarian
measures has heightened since civil society, leaders of the Barisan Nasional
(BN) component
parties as well as government ministers have unambiguously spoken
against the law.
