From a media project to do online radio, the Centre for Independent Journalism has metamorphosised into an advocacy- and training-based organisation.

Campaign

Communication
CIJ uses online communication to reach out to its members on the mailing lists and friends. Wai Fong is currently working on updating the site and to design other communication materials.

Products
CIJ has useful books on access to information and freedom of expression as well as brochures, press freedom posters and stickers.

Preparing community groups for independent audio production through RadiqRadio

The team involving Gayathry, Thanam and Sevan work with disadvantaged urban communities, indigenous communities and other community based organisations to promote independent audio production that can be shared online and CDs.

Feedback from volunteers
Hisham said of the Field Interview Techniques for Radio training: "The course…was great. I learned so much in so little time."

David Seow said of the Media Monitoring and Journalism training: "I find all the lessons (two so far) that I've been to, have been really informative and the experience has helped open up my mind to more things in the news. I used to take the news as it is, accepting it as a fact, just by reading a single newspaper. Now, I try to always look out for skewed reports and unfair views when I read."

Feedback on Principles of Journalism training
"Nice session, allowing me to better understand the media situation in Malaysia." – Sophie, a French citizen who has travelled the length of Thailand and Malaysia.

"Concise; to-the-point. Good intro to why journalism and the principles and ethics apply to reaching the public." – Alvin, blogger/chef

"I do have a better understanding of the role of journalists and the guidelines that act as the industry’s convention. The various interactions and anecdotes shared between the participants and facilitators gave a human face to the somewhat theoretical session." – Bob, blogger/web manager.
