The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is concerned that traditional dance performance Mak Yong is still being restricted by the northern Kelantan state government.
Chairman of the Kelantan State Culture Committee, Anuar Tan Abdullah told CIJ that public performance of the dance is generally banned because elements of the dance are against Islamic teaching. He declined to elaborate when asked to explain what those elements are.
The state government only allows the performance of Mak Yong, a Unesco listed heritage, in private for tourists and non Muslims for academic purposes. Anuar said the government may consider proposals for public performance, which will require the removal of the unIslamic elements and the approval by Islamic scholars in the government.
Mak yong performance has been restricted in Kelantan since 1992 by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS)-led government.
CIJ notes with concern the continuation of this ban. The right to cultural and artistic expression is an important component of freedom of speech, guaranteed under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution. CIJ urges the State Government to repeal the ban and to allow the people's cultural traditions to be enjoyed by all, regardless of race, religion or nationality.
