The Diplomacy Training Program, affiliated with the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales, Australia is calling for applications for its Migrant Workers Training Program. This will be conducted for Human Rights Defenders from the Asia-Pacific Region.

 

The training will be held in cooperation with the Migrant Forum in Asia, the Asian Centre for the Progress of People's, and the Centre for Indonesian Migrant Workers from the 21st - 27th November, 2004.

 

THE CONTEXT OF THE TRAINING

The Migrant Worker's Convention came into force in 2003 and is highly relevant to one of the region's greatest human rights challenges.The course is for human rights defenders, including those currently working on the rights of migrant workers.

 

The course content will focus on the Migrant Workers Convention in the context of the broader human rights framework, identifying the key challenges to implementing the Migrant Workers Convention in the Asia-Pacific and on the development of practical advocacy skills.

 

The course will provide participants with background knowledge about key aspects of the Migrant Workers Convention and its monitoring and reporting regime. Additionally, participants will develop practical skills in advocacy, lobbying and working with the media to advance migrant workers' rights.

 

WHO SHOULD APPLY FOR THE TRAINING?

Women and men from the Asia-Pacific region, particularly those who work for government, non-government and community-based organizations.


WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN?

  • Knowledge of the Migrant Workers Convention and its relationship to the current marginalized position of migrant workers

  • Strategies for using the Migrant Worker's Convention to advance the rights of migrant workers in the region, through interaction with governments, the UN system and international development agencies

  • Practical skills in advocacy, lobbying and working with the media

  • A major benefit from the course is the opportunity to learn from and network with others in the region.


TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The Diplomacy Training Program places a heavy emphasis on participants learning from each other. Consequently training sessions are as interactive as possible and there is considerably use of case examples and role plays.For further information please contact:
