The following is the full statement released by Nathaniel Tan, blogger an staff for opposition party PKR, recounting his experience in police detention. Nathaniel was detained on 13 July and police obtained a remand order for four days on July 14. He was investigated under the Official Secret Act (OSA) for a comment posted on his blog which links to an annoymous website accusing the deputy minister of Internal Security of corruption.

CIJ echoes GMI's protest on ISA against online critics PDF Print E-mail

On July 9th, an UMNO official, Mohamad Norza Zakaria reportedly called for bloggers who criticizes government leaders to be arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA). The statement came after blogger Tian Chua, who is also an opposition party leader for the People Justice Party, published a digitally manipulated photo featuring the deputy Prime Minister in a dinner with the look-alike of the murdered Mongolian beauty, Altantuya Sharibuu, and one of the accused Abdul Razak Baginda, who is also the deputy PM's advisor. CIJ supports the Movement to Repeal ISA (GMI) in protesting the call to invoke the law which allows for detention without trial. Read the statement (in BM) here.

A renowned writer on religion, whose works have been banned thrice by the government will be in town by the invitation of the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relation to deliver a talk this weekend. Karen Armstrong is a prolific writer on Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and has produced a number best sellers, including Through the Narrow Gate, The Battle for God: Fundamentalism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and The Spiral Staircase. Described by The Star and New Straits Times as a "religious historian", Armstrong is also a freelance broadcaster, scholar on religion, and a former Catholic nun.
