The Centre for Independent Journalism joined TakeBacktheTech last year to commemorate the 16-day Campaign to end Gender Violence by encouraging communities to make their own audio programmes. Ong Boon Keong, a long time activist, recently participated in a mission to monitor the elections in Pakistan. Unfortunately the mission had to be called off due to the insecurity there, after the team spent three weeks in Islamabad and Karachi, from 12 December 2007 to 4 January 2008. But Ong returned to Malaysia with inspiring tales about the resilience of the media and how it continues to play its role in social change in the country. In an interview with the Centre for Independent Journalism, Ong spoke on the experiences of the journalists and their agenda despite the threats they face.

Blog owners recorded higher numbers of visitors at the end of 2007 especially with readers turning to the website to get information on the different rallies organised in the Klang Valley. How far is the public disillusioned with the mainstream media and depending instead on online sources. Centre for Independent Journalism volunteer Saravanan Subramaniam spoke to a few bloggers and news portal managers to find out how they fared.
