Drop actions against students who participated in the GE PDF Print E-mail

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is concerned about the punitive action against two university students, Azlan Zainal and Mior Isfandy Mior Azizan, over statements issued on the behalf of the Parti Mahasiswa Negara (PMN) during the 12th general elections in March. The statement resulted in the suspension of Isfandy's student loan and the withholding of his full transcript, pending a disciplinary proceeding and police are investigating Azlan.

Public demonstration is to voice dissatisfaction, not a carnival to be held at indoor venues PDF Print E-mail

The Centre for Independent Journalism disagrees with the new Selangor chief minister, Khalid Ibrahim's suggestion to contain future public demonstrations in a stadium. The suggestion misses the point of a  public demonstration, which is for the public's voice on an issue to have as wide  a reach as possible in the face of the present instutionalized restrictions. Khalid should also recognize that the public who demonstrate have an issue to get across, and that they are not merely seeking for a venue to vent their frustration.

CIJ, WAMI: Media must be independent in reporting the elections PDF Print E-mail

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and Writers' Alliance for Independence (WAMI) note with concern developments that will create an unfair environment for media coverage that would certainly benefit the incumbent candidates and caretaker government. Subtle as it may be for the members of the public, media professionals should recognize them immediately as compromising fair access to media, which is a very important pre-requisite for voters to make informed decisions.
