The
Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) condemns the blocking of Raja
Petra Kamaruddin's popular blog site Malaysia Today by the Malaysian
Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The Commission is going
against the national commitments spelt out under the Bill of Guarantee
of the Multimedia Super Corridor, which promises no censorship of the
Internet. By blocking the site, the first for a social/political
content, the Commission is reflecting the extent to which narrow
political interests are dictating the rules of the game on expression
over cyberspace.

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is concerned
over the rising numbers of incidents where media personnel have been
harmed and attacked at functions where members of and supporters
representing political parties have been responsible for the
attacks. In the latest case, we are disappointed that a blame game has
resulted between the political parties involved and little concern is
shown towards the safety of journalists and photographers in doing
their work.

Writer Alliance for Media Independence
(WAMI) and the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) urge Malaysians to stop banning of books like the Sister-in-Islam (SIS)
publication "Muslim Women and Challenge of Islamic Extremism" by pushing for
media law reform. Another book "Pelik
Tapi Benar Dalam Solat" by Abdul Rahman Mohamed is also banned.

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and Writers' Alliance for
Media Independence (WAMI) are deeply concerned about the defamation
suit filed against blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin by lawyer Shafee
Abdullah, who also demanded through a court order for Raja Petra to
reveal the sources of his articles said to be defamatory.

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and Writers
Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI) condemn calls to use the Internal Security Act (ISA) and Sedition Act
against the Bar Council for organising a forum on "Conversion to Islam" on
August 9, which was aborted shortly after it started due to pressure from a
group of about 300 protesters. We call upon civil society to express our solidarity with the Bar in the face of such threats.
