Overall, the state of freedom of expression in 2007 marks a further deterioration compared to 2006. While 2006 was highlighted by the suspension of newspapers due to the Muhammad caricature, the closure of public discussion on race and religion initiated by the Article 11 coalition, and the censorship on books and film, 2007 was the year of persecution and clampdown on people who use alternative platforms for expression, such as bloggers and street assemblies, and increasing media interference to tighten the flow of information.

CIJ, WAMI dispute minister's accusations PDF Print E-mail

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI) reject the accusations by Minister of Information Zainuddin Maidin that we are linked to Hindraf and that we are being used by foreign powers, as a tactic to draw the attention away from genuine criticisms.

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and the Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI) are deeply disturbed that the government has resorted to the draconian Internal Security Act (ISA) to arrest five leaders of Hindraf (Hindu Rights Action Force). The use of the ISA comes after three Hindraf leaders have been arrested and charged for sedition. The arrest indicates that the government of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has lost all respect for the mandate that the people gave to him based on his promises for reform and greater accountability.
