The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) urges the Minister of Home Affairs, Syed Hamid Albar to give a more concrete commitment to press freedom, which must include significant reform to the administrative powers of the Minister and to the Printing Presses and Publications Act (PPPA). The Minister's suggestion to do away with the annual renewal of license will have minimum impact if the press is still beholden to the discretionary powers of the Minister to revoke or suspend the printing license in the absence of a judicial review. |

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI) are deeply concerned about the banning of Tamil paper Makkal Osai, following the the Ministry of Home Affairs's decision not to renew its publication permit lapsed since 2007. The refusal to grant a permit sparks worry as the government shows no signs of reforming towards greater openness and to be more attentive to the voices of the community. As the paper gave relatively more coverage to the opposition during the general election, the ban gives basis to the impression that this is a "punishment" by the Barisan Nasional government.

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is concerned about the punitive action against two university students, Azlan Zainal and Mior Isfandy Mior Azizan, over statements issued on the behalf of the Parti Mahasiswa Negara (PMN) during the 12th general elections in March. The statement resulted in the suspension of Isfandy's student loan and the withholding of his full transcript, pending a disciplinary proceeding and police are investigating Azlan. |
