The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is concerned that police in the district of Sibu, of the state Sarawak is barring crime reporters access to crime stories by reportedly introducing several restrictions and threatening to arrest them under the Official Secret Act (OSA) if they breached the restrictions. More seriously, the police directive means reporters are put in a difficult position to produce fair and balanced reports to serve the public interest.

Have parliamentary select committee instead of taskforce to control Internet PDF Print E-mail

The Malaysian government has decided to set up a taskforce to study how existing legislation can be use to control websites and blog with purportedly "pornographic and seditious" content. The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is concerned that this marks the start of official censorship of the Internet, despite government assurances to the contrary. It comes after repeated threats by various ministers and members of parliament over the past three years to control online content.

A renowned writer on religion, whose works have been banned thrice by the government will be in town by the invitation of the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relation to deliver a talk this weekend. Karen Armstrong is a prolific writer on Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and has produced a number best sellers, including Through the Narrow Gate, The Battle for God: Fundamentalism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and The Spiral Staircase. Described by The Star and New Straits Times as a "religious historian", Armstrong is also a freelance broadcaster, scholar on religion, and a former Catholic nun.
