Thirty-one organizations spoke out against the defamation suits by the New Straits Times Press berhad (NSTP), against blogger Ooi Chuan Aun and Ahiruddin Attan, or Jeff Ooi and Rocky's Bru as they are popularly known, in a joint statement released today.

Banning Books Closes Malaysian Minds, Ministry Reviews Wanted for Accountability PDF Print E-mail

Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI) objects the banning of the 18 books related to religion and religious studies, as this is another instance of the state's interference in the market of ideas and thoughts, to suppress one opinion for the prevalence of another. WAMI urges the Internal Security Ministry to publish at once its book reviews on these books for Malaysians to examine its decisions. PM Abdullah's so-called reform will be reduced to international laughing stocks if celebrated academic works are allowed to be banned by bureaucrats at whim.
