CIJ and WAMI call for the retraction of police report on three dailies and for the public to support journalists who dare to be brave to report the truth. The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department has lodged a police report against The Star, New Straits Times and Berita Harian for reporting on the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the Lingam video scandal ahead of its release by the Cabinet on Friday.

Civil society groups express solidarity with blogger Raja Petra PDF Print E-mail

Six civil society group, including the National Alliance of Bloggers and Centre for Independent Journalism have stated solidarity with blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who is now detained in the Sungai Buloh prison for charges under the Sedition Act. This is the fourth time the blogger was taken action against using this law. The group unanimously opposed to the use of Sedition Act to jail the blogger and have called for the abolishment of the law.

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) congratulates winners of the 12th General Elections and is encouraged by a stronger opposition in Parliament, which we hope will enhance the role of the institution in ensuring a more effective representation for the rakyat. CIJ is especially encouraged by the election of 15 candidates representing DAP, PAS, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Parti Sosialis Malaysia who had pledged their commitment to table the Freedom of Information Bill at the state and federal levels, among other laws.
