A group of people who went on a cycling tour across the peninsular to raise awareness on national issues were arrested, interrogated, held for hours in police station and their bicycles torched by arsonists. Among them are two parliamentarians who supported the exercise. At first, police said their arrest is due to illegal assembly. Then, perhaps realizing that there was no assembly involved, the police now said it's an offence for roping in minors in the exercise. Civil society protested strongly at this crude attempt to stop the group, Jaringan Orang Tertindas (Jerit) from publicly raising issues, in a joint statement below.

On 17 October, activist Cheng Lee Whee from human rights group SUARAM in Johor was arrested under the ISA, making her the fourth person nabbed under the law since September this year. Police said Cheng was detained because she was "spreading information that could cause fear among the people". However, as with the arrest of journalist Tan Hoon Cheng, Lee was released the next day when the police's application for a remand order was rejected. Top activists from Indonesia issued a petition of protest to the Inspector General Police, Musa Hassan and Chair of the National Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) Abu Talib Othman in regards to the spate of ISA arrests recently. Spearheaded by the Indonesian Front for Civil and Political Rights, the activists also has organized a demonstration outside the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta on 18 September. The group of forty was met by the Ambassador Rep Datuk Amran MD Zin, Press Attache, Political Attache and Defence Attache Colonel Mohd Ramli Jafar and a dozen of staff, who promised the group to deliver the petition to the addressed recipients. Eleven civil society groups jointly issued a statement in conjunction with the 45th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia. In particular, the eleven groups outline their stand in regards to the Pakatan Rakyat's stated plan to take over the BN-led government through crossover of members of parliament.
