Once again, the media council proposal is raised as a way of "monitoring" the media. CIJ views this with concern, but invites the government and the MPI to have a broad based discussion on the issue with some assurances that the laws that govern the media will be reviewed.

Civil society groups take Selangor MB to task on his commitment for FOI PDF Print E-mail

Fifty-nine civil society groups today expressed surprise that the Selangor Mentri Besar appeared to be backtracking on his commitment to introduce a freedom of information law in the state. They call on the state government to set up a task force to review existing practices and the draft law for the state level.

Human rights watchdog, SUARAM reports that the state of human rights in Malaysia has gone from "bad to worse", and freedom of expression and information have not seen improvements.
