The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) calls for more political will from the government to improve the state of press freedom in the country and and the right of Malaysians to access to information. Malaysia's standing in the latest Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Press Freedom Index, at 131, compared to 132 last year, is still low and indicative of the lack of progress in translating rhetoric to concrete reform measures.

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is deeply concerned about the targeted condemnation against a network of women's rights organisations.The Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) has been raising questions over the absence of human rights standards in a recent Syariah court decision to whip a woman for consuming alcohol. JAG has also called for the repeal of the syariah criminal offences law, which has been criticised by 40 Muslim organizations and two wings of the ruling party UMNO, for allegedly insulting Islam and the nine Malaysian monarchs, in their role as guardians of Islam.

SINGAPORE: Appellate court affirms FEER defamed Lees PDF Print E-mail

The Singapore Appeals Court upheld on 7 October 2009 an earlier ruling that the "Far Eastern Economic Review" magazine and its editor, Hugo Restal, had defamed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his father, former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, media reports said.
