Tibet: Chinese authorities black out independent coverage of deadly protest

The Chinese authorities have made it nearly impossible for independent journalists to cover the protests in Tibet and in neighbouring provinces by imposing "suffocating restrictions" on the press, from expelling foreign reporters to censoring news coverage.

Time for changes in media and information laws and practices

The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) congratulates winners of the 12th General Elections and is encouraged by a stronger opposition in Parliament, which we hope will enhance the role of the institution in ensuring a more effective representation for the rakyat. CIJ is especially encouraged by the election of 15 candidates representing DAP, PAS, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Parti Sosialis Malaysia who had pledged their commitment to table the Freedom of Information Bill at the state and federal levels, among other laws.

What do we expect from the 12th General Elections? CIJ is encouraged that there are candidates who have pledged to table the Freedom of Information Bill if elected. But we note with concern the incident where journalists were harassed and where media reports have been biased against the non-Barisan Nasional parties; but we are encouraged by the sharing of information by civil society initiatives.
